Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD)
Did You Know?
Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) is a more severe form of the typical premenstrual syndrome (PMS) most women may experience (2020). It includes symptoms of PMS, but in a more extreme form with additional symptoms as well. These symptoms are typically so severe and intense that it will inhibit everyday functioning (2019).
What are the symptoms of PMDD?
Anger or irritability
Anxiety, and in a more severe form, panic attacks
Depression, and in a more severe form, suicidality
Fatigue and low energy
Difficulty concentrating
Binge eating
Mood swings
Headaches
Insomnia
How is PMDD diagnosed?
There are very few diagnostic tests available to diagnose PMDD (2019, 2020). A healthcare provider may ask a client to document their symptoms for two or more cycles, look at the symptoms (including finding at least one mood-related symptom), conduct a pelvic exam, and then make a diagnosis (2019, 2020).
There are some risk factors that may contribute to PMDD, such as a family history of mood disorders (depression, anxiety, postpartum depression) or a family history of PMS or PMDD.
Because PMDD is a chronic condition, treatment will be needed. The following are some ways in which PMDD may be treated:
Dietary changes
Antidepressants (SSRIs)
Birth control pills
Regular exercise
Stress management
Vitamins and supplements
Anti-inflammatory medications
