Foods that are beneficial for mental health
With the holidays in mind, eating healthy might not be everyone’s largest priority. It is interesting to note that eating certain foods does not only affect your physical health, it can affect your mental health as well!
Here is a list of foods to enjoy in order to optimize your mental health well-being:
Water, preferably 2 liters a day!
Nuts, berries, veggies, whole grains
Brown rice
Seeds
Fish
Salmon, trout, sardines
Unsaturated fats
Olive oil, flaxseed oil, walnuts
Spinach and kale
Here is a list of food to stay away from in order to optimize your mental health well-being:
Sugary drinks and excessive amounts of caffeine
You can switch your caffeine source from coffee to tea for healthier benefits
Excessive amounts of meat and dairy products
Switch these with fruits, nuts, vegetables, and fish!
Although it can be hard to stay away from processed food, oftentimes this food is hurting our body and mind the most. Sugary and processed foods can actually cause inflammation in the body and brain. This inflammation may contribute to anxiety, depression, or other mood disorders (Sutter Health, 2022). It is fascinating to note how consumption of different foods may affect our mood and response to stress. It is important to be mindful of the nutrients we put in our body (or deprive our body of) and how it can change our outlook on life. By adhering to a diet that is rich in nutrients, you are positioning yourself for reduced fluctuations in mood and an enhanced capacity to concentrate. Research has also demonstrated that consuming clean diets that primarily comprise whole, unrefined foods can alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety.
