Supporting Someone with a Mental Illness or Addiction
February is a month where we are reminded to celebrate the people we love. However, if your loved one is struggling with mental illness or addiction, loving them properly will probably look a little different than usual.
When an individual is diagnosed with a mental illness, oftentimes their lives can change drastically. They will need the love and support close family and friends can provide for them. Some ways you can offer this individual support are:
Find out if the individual is receiving the level of help they are wanting, and if not, assist them in finding resources
Express concern and offer help
Treat them with compassion, empathy, and understanding
Ask questions and really listen to the answers they provide
Open and honest discussion can be helpful!
Educate yourself and others
If you don’t know the best way to help and provide support, ask! Oftentimes they are the people who know their own needs best.
Providing love and support for an individual struggling with addiction can be difficult. Here are some tips:
Show compassion, don’t shame or criticize
Addiction is a disease, not a choice
Do not expect immediate change, but do not enable
Allow them the space to make mistakes
Educate yourself and others
Respect their privacy
It is important that when pouring into others, you do not forget about yourself. Make sure to listen to your own needs and prioritize your own mental health in the way you are prioritizing others.
