The newspaper celebrated its 60th anniversary in January 2007. The Times and Gainesvilletimes.com have been repeatedly recognized for excellence by state and national news organizations. The Gainesville Daily Times’ first issue hit the streets on Jan. 26, 1947. The newspaper was owned by Charles and Lessie Smithgall. The newspaper started with about 3,000 circulation and today the circulation is 26,000.
